I  accept credit card, Venmo, cash and checks.  I will give you detailed billing documentation “superbill” for you to file with your insurer.  But as an added bonus, I will guide you through filing your claims, and on some occasions, file your claim for you. It is common for insurers to reimburse a substantial part of the fee (50-80%)  once you meet your deductible.  Inquire with your insurer for out of network coverage for psychotherapy with these questions:

I’m a fee-for-service, out-of-network practice, so here’s how you check your eligibility for insurance reimbursement.

  • Contact Your Insurance Company – Find their phone number on your insurance card.
  • See If You Have Out-Of-Network Benefits – Ask if your plan includes out-of-network benefits for mental health care.
  • Ask If You Have a Deductible Before Coverage Starts – Ask what your out-of-network mental health services deductible is and what amount you’ll have to pay out of pocket before your policy starts to reimburse you.
  •  Find Out How Much Your Plan Will Reimburse – Ask about your policy’s maximum allowed amount for the mental health service code 90837 and what percentage your policy pays. Ask for that percentage for a master-level therapist (social worker, professional counselor, etc.).
  • Use This Information To Understand What Therapy Will Cost You – The percent of the maximum allowed is what you’d receive as a reimbursement after you have met your deductible for the year.

NOTE THAT HMO PLANS, TRICARE,  MEDICARE AND MEDICAID DO NOT REIMBURSE FOR OUT-OF-NETWORK MENTAL HEALTH COSTS.

No Surprises Act / Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit http://www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
